Numbering Our Days
How would you respond to this statement, “Life is short, so live wisely!” Some people would spend time building relationships, chasing their dreams, while others aim for an carly retirement. Yet, they may still have regrets in the end. What then does it mean to live wisely? The Bible gives us the answer in how we should live as God’s people through Moses’ prayer in Psalm 90:1-12. He is one of the characters in the Bible who had a hard life. However, in his re-flection, Moses was satisfied. We can attain the same satisfaction by studying this passage.
First, we must acknowledge God as our Lord. Immediately in verse 1, we find Moses declaring God as Lord. He recognized Him as the Creator. Unlike the unrighteous people in Romans 1:18-30, who reject God and who are lord over their own lives. These people will never find satisfaction in their achievements. In addition, Moses declares God his dwelling place, for a person who lived 80 years in the desert. This shows that only God’s people can find a safe refuge in spite of all the troubles in this world.
Second, we must realize the frailty of our lives. According to verses 3 to 9, our lives are short. By the word of God, return to dust. We disappear as fast as green grass turns brown. Even if our age reaches to a 100, it is short for an eternal God who has no limits. Time is fast and it has been running the same way since the Fall.
Lastly, we need to ask God for a heart of wisdom (vv.10-12). King Solomon was the wisest, richest, and most successful man who ever lived, but in the end, everything was meaningless for him. After acquiring more wealth and possessions anyone could ever imagine, they were nothing for he cannot bring them to eternity. In this chapter, knowing that life is short is wisdom for it leads us to live with urgency each day. It is not worth falling short of God’s glory time and time again with a short life like ours. It is not worth investing only on earthly things when we cannot bring a single one to Heaven. Wisdom is to invest in things that are eternal and that glorify God.
